I conceptualized and designed the front and back covers for the spring 2021 issue, themed “Treehouse” as a call back to childhood play and in honor of Oxford’s abundant natural beauty.&nbsp;I also created editorial illustrations, designed select interior layout pages, and compiled/edited the final design file for the magazine. For the front cover, I was inspired by the idea of a tree house composed of leaves and woods rather than a literal treehouse. I took a horticulture class at Wellesley in spring 2020 and this picture (left bottom) I took of these massive leaves stuck with me. I intially edited the image to create the frame of the treehouse, but then combined this silhouette with this leafy picture (right bottom) taken by Claire Ion. Then, I inserted this photo of Japanese trees by Toby Phillips into the interior of the house. In my fall semester review committee for my English Honores thesis on the use of the word “thing(s)” in literature, I was asked how I found the “coterie” of authors I was covering. Twitter poetry bots like @poclitbot and @queerlitbot are among my favorite and most frequented ways to discover new poems and poets. I’d pitched the idea of starting a Wellesley Review bot (@twreview_bot) for my college’s literary magazine because I believe these short snippets of lines of poetry are a brilliant way into reading poems and poets that are either emerging or not typically included in the literary canon.&nbsp; Problem Statement: How we can make poetry by marginalized writers more accessible? Why We Should Care: Primary and secondary school English curriculums in the United States still predominantly revolve around white cis-male heterosexual narratives and writers. For many students, poetry seems inaccessible and daunting because of the difficulty of relating to language written centuries ago and the privilleged identifies of most of the poets they encounter in school. Research: We interviewed poetry enthusiasts about their experience of becoming interested in and excited about poetry. Through these interviews, we identified a common catalyzing moment of interest for the interviewees when they read a piece and realized “Oh! However, the character limit for Twitter means that users have to actively seek out the remainder of a poem to find its full context. The brief glimpse readers get within that character limit is great for finding new poems and poets, but as of now poetry bots do not accomodate delving deeper into a poem or a poet’s repertoire.&nbsp; 2. Discourse is frequent on twitter and readers want to be able to read without bumping into trolls. 3. Poets looking for new literary magazines to read or to submit to wish to be able to quickly access various literary magazines at once. I wanted the visual aesthetic to be vaguely garrish as an encouragement to step outside of traditional “formal” stylicisms of poetry and dive into a childlike exploration of the words. The colors and icons I designated were a response to those impulses.&nbsp;Beyond the aesthetic, I made sure that the background and foreground colors I chose had a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 according to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) to make the application as accessible as possible. High-Fidelity Prototype I designed the high-fidelity prototype in Figma, adding additional features like dark mode to ensure the reader can have a reading experience most well suited for their comfort. The book showcases an array of work that uncovers the often unseen corners of Los Angeles: poems from the movie, behind the scenes photographs, and deleted scenes. Along with new musings, such as essays, paintings, and collaborations with over 40 visual artists. An artful ode to the city we call home, SOTLA invites readers to dive into the stories of everyday people from a city with mythic grandeur. I was inspired by the gestures and directioning in metro signage. Over the summer of 2019, the poets collaborated with Carlos López Estrada on the Sundance film Summertime. Following the theatrical release of the film and their work on the Summertime Impact Campaign with Executive Producer Kelly Marie Tran, the artists formed a collective as a way to continue their collaboration, maintain autonomy over their work, and provide meaningful community education. The collective was founded by Marquesha Babers, Hanna Harris, Marcus James, Kelly Marie Tran, and Carlos López Estrada, in August 2021. I was commissioned to create the logo, website, and social media infographics to launch the collective. My main projects were to create social media posts for Sesame Street English and edit and recompile the Sesame Street English homework workbooks. Beyond those primary projects, I designed posters and mobile/desktop wallpapers. I also reformatted the Sesame Street Brand Book from a horizontal orientation and containing English text to a vertical orientation and containing English text and Japanese translations. As an indepent research project, I analyzed the different social media presences of Sesame Street English platforms in Japan, China, and Taiwan against other popular English-teaching programs in the areas and developed strategies to consolidate the brand in the various regions.
